AK Issues New Guidelines After Major Athletics Competition Is Cancelled
Athletics Kenya (AK) has announced the cancellation of a major competition that was scheduled to take place this Friday in Nairobi.
In an official statement released on Monday, the federation confirmed that the World Athletics Indoor Trials, which were set for January 30–31, will no longer take place due to unavoidable circumstances.
However, Athletics Kenya moved quickly to assure athletes and fans that preparations for the World Athletics Indoor Championships, scheduled for March 20–22 in Poland, remain on course.
According to the federation, team selection will now be conducted using a time-based qualification process.AK explained that athletes’ performances during the official World Athletics qualification window will be closely monitored.
“In light of this development, AK will proceed with the selection of athletes who will represent the country through a time-based selection process. This will be done after the World Athletics qualification period officially closes on March 8, 2026,” the statement read.
The federation also urged athletes to remain focused and continue training, emphasizing that performances in upcoming competitions will play a key role in final team selection.
“The federation will continue to monitor performances during the qualification period,” AK added.
Kenya is expected to select athletes in the following disciplines for the championships:

60m hurdles women
-
400m men and women
-
800m men and women
-
1500m men and women
-
3000m men and women
Athletes will now race against time to secure qualifying marks as the championship deadline approaches.
