Feb 8, 2026– Joshua Cheptegei of Uganda claimed victory at the 2026 Burj2Burj Half Marathon on Sunday, finishing in 59:26 as the Olympic and World Champion held off Kenyan favourite Nicholas Kipkorir and Tanzanian Alphonce Simbu in a breathtaking elite showdown.

The race got off to a controlled start from the Jumeirah Emirates Towers, with the world-class field settling into a tight pack in the early kilometres. Cheptegei, Kipkorir, and Simbu quickly emerged as the frontrunners, maintaining a brisk pace that hinted at the sub-60 finish many had anticipated.

By the 8-kilometre mark near the UAE flag, the trio was already neck-and-neck, demonstrating both tactical awareness and raw speed. Enos Kipruto of Kenya, Ethiopia’s Lulu Negera and Aklilu Asfaw, and Germany’s Richard Ringer trailed closely, but the focus remained squarely on the three athletes vying for the title.

Kipkorir, coming into the race with one of the fastest pre-event times, kept close contact with Cheptegei, testing the reigning champion’s rhythm. Simbu, Tanzania’s rising star who has been rewriting his nation’s running story, matched every surge, proving he belongs among the world’s top half-marathoners. Their high cadence and efficient running form made for an electrifying spectacle as the course wound through Sheikh Zayed Road and along Dubai’s iconic skyline.

Cheptegei’s experience on this course showed in the latter stages. The Ugandan champion gradually opened a small gap in the final kilometres, maintaining a smooth stride and high cadence. Kipkorir and Simbu continued to battle each other, neither yielding as they approached the finish line, but Cheptegei’s relentless pace proved decisive.

Behind the leading trio, Enos Kipruto finished fourth in 1:00:03, followed closely by Ethiopia’s Lulu Negera (1:00:04) and Aklilu Asfaw (1:00:27). Germany’s Richard Ringer (1:01:07), Kenyan Yonah Mateiko (1:01:16), Ethiopia’s Haftu Teklu (1:02:25), and Chile’s Carlos Díaz (1:03:34) rounded out the top ten, with Díaz delivering a strong performance to secure 10th place.

The Burj2Burj Half Marathon drew a global field, with 172 nationalities and 110 countries represented. For the elite men, it was a race of precision, pacing, and strategy, culminating in a rare sub-60 performance for Cheptegei, Kipkorir, and Simbu, all pushing the limits of half-marathon excellence.

Cheptegei’s win adds another laurel to his decorated career, following Olympic and World Championship triumphs, while Kipkorir and Simbu’s performances signal an intense rivalry that promises more thrilling contests on the international road racing scene.

The 2026 edition of Burj2Burj reinforced Dubai’s growing status as a premier venue for elite road racing, combining world-class competition, challenging conditions, and a spectacular city backdrop for athletes and fans alike.
