NAIROBI, Kenya, March 24, 2026—As the 7th Kip Keino Classic Continental Tour Gold approaches, Nyayo National Stadium is buzzing with technical activity. Meet director Barnaba Korir is leading a critical pre-event certification to guarantee every track, implement, and timing system meets global standards ahead of Kenya’s premier athletics showdown.
“The Kip Keino Classic is a showcase of Kenya’s athletics excellence. Every detail matters—from athlete facilities to the timing systems. We are leaving nothing to chance,” Korir said during the ongoing inspection.
Working closely with competitions director Kennedy Tanui and Sports Stadia Director General Timothy Kilimo, Korir is coordinating a week-long technical audit to ensure full compliance with World Athletics standards.
Renovated and Ready for Certification
Nyayo Stadium has undergone extensive renovations, including a new track surface and upgraded facilities for field events. These improvements triggered the need for renewed World Athletics certification to host a Gold-level meet.
A certified surveyor from Belgium is on site, meticulously checking track dimensions, field-event zones, and other infrastructure to ensure global standards are met.
“The upgrades necessitate fresh certification. This guarantees that the stadium is fully compliant for a Gold-level event,” Tanui explained.
The certification process spans three days of technical inspections and two days of compiling reports for World Athletics, allowing officials to correct any gaps in time for the event.
Kilimo Highlights Venue Readiness
Timothy Kilimo, the Sports Stadia Director General stressed that every aspect of the stadium, from the track to athlete amenities, is critical for a world-class competition.
“While scheduling between football and athletics can be challenging, the government remains fully committed to supporting the Kip Keino Classic. Hosting such events is vital as we prepare our athletes for global competitions, and despite external disruptions affecting travel and budgets, we are working closely with all stakeholders to ensure the event’s success,” said Kilimo
Precision Checks on Equipment and Implements
“We are ensuring that all timing equipment is fully compliant and operational. All implements are being checked and certified for use,” Tanui said.

Certification is crucial to ensure performances at Nyayo Stadium are officially recognized by World Athletics.
“Once certified, every time and distance recorded here will be globally valid. That recognition is essential for elite athletes,” Tanui said.
