NAIROBI, Kenya, March 19, 2026Nairobi is stepping up as the global spotlight turns to Kenya’s premier track and field showcase, the Kip Keino Classic, slated for April 24 at Nyayo National Stadium. The 2026 edition promises elite competition, highlighted by the return of Olympic and World Champion hammer thrower Ethan Katzberg from Canada, who celebrated victory in Nairobi last year with a world-leading mark of 82.73m in the hammer throw.

“As a federation, we are ready to welcome the world’s best back to Nairobi,” said Barnaba Korir, Meet Director. “Ethan Katzberg’s return after his incredible performance here in 2025 brings energy and prestige to the Kip Keino Classic. This year’s event will be bigger and more competitive, with top international athletes and strong local talent ready to shine.”

Katzberg’s victory in 2025 not only marked a dominant performance on the world stage but also positioned him among the sport’s leading figures. Competing in front of a spirited Nairobi crowd, the Canadian’s world-leading throw reinforced the city’s appeal to global athletes, while his presence next month underscores the Classic’s growing international stature.

A Platform for Local Stars and Global Rivalry

Barnaba Korir, Meet Director of the Kip Keino Classic, addresses the media as preparations intensify for the 2026 edition, promising world-class competition and top international athletes.

While the international lineup brings star power, the Kip Keino Classic also remains an essential platform for Kenyan athletes to score World Ranking points and gain international exposure. “We are creating valuable opportunities for our local athletes to compete at home against world-class competition,” Korir explained. “This helps them prepare for major competitions like the upcoming World Relays and global championships.”

Kenya’s traditional strength in distance racing continues to be complemented by growing sprint and field event programmes, reflecting the evolving ambitions of the nation’s athletics ecosystem. Stars such as Ferdinand Omanyala have helped elevate the profile of sprinting among Kenyan audiences, adding excitement to the Classic’s competitive mix.

To ensure the meet meets World Athletics standards, technical preparations are already underway. Korir highlighted, “Next week, we will welcome the TimeTronics team from Belgium, who will be here Monday through Thursday to verify timing systems and equipment. In addition, a dedicated surveyor team will certify the track and field measurements to international specifications.” These steps are critical in staging a World Athletics Gold Label event that meets the expectations of athletes and fans alike.

Celebrating Kenya’s Sporting Legacy and Global Appeal

The Kip Keino Classic is more than a competition. It is a celebration of Kenya’s running heritage and a significant contributor to the country’s global brand and economy. “This event is not just about who crosses the finish line first,” Korir said. “It’s about showcasing Kenya on the world stage, supporting our athletes, and bringing economic impact through sport.”

Athletics remains one of Kenya’s most successful exports, with national champions earning significant prize money on the global circuit and bringing foreign exchange back into the country. The meet also complements the nation’s tourism narrative, with visiting athletes and officials able to experience landmarks like Nairobi National Park and the Maasai Mara National Reserve, reinforcing Kenya’s appeal beyond the track.

With the confirmed return of a star like Katzberg, a growing international contingent, and rigorous preparations underway including technical verification from Belgium, the Kip Keino Classic 2026 is poised to be a landmark event that further cements Nairobi’s place on the international athletics calendar.

As Korir concluded, “We are proud of what we have built and look forward to delivering an unforgettable meet that celebrates elite sport, national pride, and Kenya’s global contributions to athletics.”
