Late Surge Lifts Bett to 5000m Title at Athletics Kenya Kericho Meet

Shadrack Kipchumba Bett waited, measured the pace, and then delivered a decisive finishing surge to claim victory in the men’s 5000m at Kaproret Stadium in Kericho County AK meet on Saturday, underlining his growing stature as a specialist over the distance.

The 25-year-old, who trains in Chepsir under coach Mathew Kemei within the Chepseon Athletics Club setup, executed a tactically disciplined race before breaking clear in the closing stages to win in 14:16.23.

For much of the contest, the field remained tightly bunched, with no athlete willing to fully commit to the pace. But as the tempo lifted in the final kilometers, Bett responded with authority, injecting a surge that quickly thinned the lead pack and left his rivals unable to respond.

“I stayed patient because I knew the race would open up late,” Bett said after the race. “My training in Chepsir has really focused on strength in the final laps, and today I felt in control when it mattered. This win gives me confidence as I build towards bigger competitions.”

Rival Pressure Falls Short as Bett Pulls Away

Behind him, Brian Kiptoo of Kiptere fought to stay within range but ultimately settled for second in 14:23.88, while teammate Alfred Kipchirchir secured third in 14:47.07 to complete a strong showing for the club.

The decisive moment came in the closing laps when Bett shifted gears, turning a tactical and closely fought race into a clear victory. His ability to time the break perfectly exposed the limits of his challengers, who had matched the pace early but could not sustain the late acceleration.

From Mountain Runs to Track Authority

Bett’s victory adds to a steadily building résumé that reflects both versatility and progression. He finished 10th in a major 2024 at the Kapatagat Forest half marathon after showcased his endurance credentials by winning the 8km race at the 2023 Barngetuny Mountain Run.

In 2025, he further demonstrated range by placing third in the 3000m steeplechase at the Athletics Kenya Weekend Meeting in Afraha stadium. That blend of strength and speed was evident in Kericho, where his composure and finishing power proved decisive.

Further down the field, Kericho showed impressive depth, placing four athletes between fifth and eighth positions, though they were unable to break into the podium places. Chepseon and Kiptere controlled the top end of the race, combining for all podium finishes.

The result, officially ratified by the chief track judge, capped a competitive day of distance running at Kaproret Stadium and reinforced Bett’s emergence as a serious contender on the domestic circuit.
