Nyayo Stadium Nears Global Standards with Minor Technical Fixes Ahead of Kip Keino Classic
Crucial Technical Preparations Underway at Nyayo Stadium
NAIROBI, Kenya, March 25, 2025— With less than a month to go before the 7th Absa Kip Keino Classic Continental Tour Gold, attention has shifted from athletes to the stadium itself. Teams of international experts are now inspecting Nyayo National Stadium to ensure it meets the technical standards required for a world-class athletics event.
Leading the stadium inspection is Belgian surveyor Jimmy De Swart, a seasoned expert in sports construction with 27 years of experience. Representing Sportinfrabouw NV, a firm specializing in the design, installation, and maintenance of outdoor sports and recreational facilities, De Swart is one of only two certified track surveyors in Belgium.
“In Belgium, there are only two surveyors qualified to work on athletics tracks, and I’m one of them,” said De Swart. “It’s a big responsibility to ensure a World Athletics-level event can take place here without any issues.”
Track Certification: Minor Issues, Major Confidence
De Swart has already completed the base measurements of the track and reports that the facility is mostly in order.
“I’ve identified several small issues, mostly minor and fixable,” he explained. “Some markings, especially on the javelin runway, high jump, and pole vault areas, remain incomplete, likely due to rain interruptions. But these are simple fixes.”
The Belgian expert emphasized that the most critical component is the overall measurement of the track itself, which determines the validity of competition results and any potential records.
“This process guarantees that the track is correctly measured and marked,” he said. “It’s essential because if a world record is set here, the accuracy of the track must be beyond question.”
Such precision is vital in elite athletics, where even minor discrepancies in markings or track dimensions can impact an athlete's performance and the legitimacy of results.
Timing and Equipment Testing
Alongside the track certification, the timing and competition equipment is being rigorously tested to meet international standards. This team is led by Belgian expert Kim Peeters, who ensures all systems function reliably for accurate timing, measurement, and recording of results during the event.
“The equipment must be fully reliable, especially for record-level performances,” said Peeters. “Our tests confirm that athletes’ results will be precise and globally recognized.”

“The stadium is nearly ready,” De Swart said. “The small fixes are easily completed, and the track is otherwise fully compliant with international standards.”
