Addis Ababa sub-10 run signals return to form ahead of April 24 home showdown

Ferdinand Omanyala is steadily rebuilding his sprint rhythm at a crucial point in the season, with renewed confidence setting the tone ahead of the Absa Kip Keino Classic Continental Tour Gold meeting set for April 24 at Nyayo Stadium.

The Kenyan sprint star enters the home event after a challenging two-year spell marked by fluctuating performances around the 10.0 to 10.1 mark, a period he describes as one of adjustment and constant recalibration.

“Over the past two seasons, consistency has been a work in progress. I’ve been hovering around 10.0 to 10.1, and we’ve had to keep adjusting to find a more refined blueprint,” Omanyala says.

Despite the setbacks, there have been flashes of elite speed. In 2024, he produced strong results, including 9.88, 9.79, and 9.98, but injury interruptions disrupted continuity in the following season.

“2024 was actually a good year for me — I ran 9.88, 9.79, and 9.98. But last season was a bit back and forth, mainly because of injury setbacks,” he explains.

Those challenges forced a reset rather than progression.

“That disruption slowed my momentum, but it also forced a reset in priorities.”

Signs of a rebuilding phase

Omanyala now believes the foundation is returning, with early-season performances offering signs of stability rather than uncertainty.

“This season I feel much fitter. I started my campaign last week and I feel more confident. The strength is coming back, and I’m just looking forward to seeing how the competitions unfold.”

The focus has shifted from isolated fast times to race structure and consistency across phases.

“My own analysis is that we are on the right track. We’ve done a lot of work on both phases of my race.”

He remains cautious, letting competition provide the real assessment.

“Once competition begins, I’ll be able to see clearly which areas still need work, but right now everything feels aligned.”

Addis Ababa breakthrough restores confidence

That alignment was reinforced at the Addis Ababa Grand Prix, where Omanyala produced one of his clearest indicators of return to form.

He won his heat in 10.11 seconds before powering to victory in the final in 9.98 seconds, marking a return to sub-10 speed and offering a timely confidence boost ahead of the home season.

The performance also highlighted improved execution across rounds, a key element he has been working to refine.

Kip Keino Classic: home pressure and global stakes

Attention now turns to Nairobi, where the Kip Keino Classic offers both opportunity and pressure in equal measure.

As one of Africa’s premier World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meetings, the event brings together international competition while placing Kenya’s sprint ambitions under a global spotlight.

For Omanyala, it is also a personal test in front of a home crowd that expects consistency at the highest level.

“I’ve been aiming for global medals for some time, and that has always been on my mind,” he says.

Racing under lights adds new dimension

This year’s edition introduces evening competition under floodlights at Nyayo Stadium, creating a different racing atmosphere closer to Diamond League conditions.

Omanyala sees it as both rare and valuable exposure.

“Racing under floodlights, at night, is something different. I think Diamond League meetings in this setting are rare in Kenya and Africa, so I’m really looking forward to it.”

The shift in environment adds another layer to a meet already rich in expectation, as athletes adapt to both competition and conditions.

With Addis Ababa offering a return to sub-10 speed and training signs pointing upward, Omanyala arrives at the Kip Keino Classic with growing momentum.

However, the real test remains whether he can translate that progress into sustained performance on home soil against a strong international field.
